Winning Grants Proposals

Three hours of learning that will change every application you ever write.

Proposal writing is the single most searched skill in the international NGO sector. This masterclass gives you the frameworks, tools, and techniques the strongest proposals share, ready to apply to your next application from the moment you finish each lesson.

The shift

Competitive funding does not go to the best mission. It goes to the best proposal.

Scoring panels do not award grants to the organisations with the most compelling work. They award them to the organisations that understand how panels read, and that consistently produce technically rigorous, persuasively written submissions reviewers can score highly.

Most proposals lose before the writing even begins. They are written for the applicant rather than the reviewer. They describe what the organisation wants to do, not why a funder should believe it will work. They bury a strong idea under a weak structure, an unclear theory of change, a logframe that does not hold together, and a budget narrative that justifies nothing.

None of this is about talent. It is about craft, and craft can be taught.

What you will be able to do

What you will be able to do by the end.

This course is built to be applied, not just studied. Work through it with a live or realistic proposal open alongside you.

Read a call for proposal like a scorer.

Analyse a call for proposals from the reviewer's perspective and develop your strategy before you write a single word.

Write a compelling needs statement.

Build an evidence-based case that establishes the problem, the context, and your organisation's unique positioning.

Develop a genuine theory of change.

Articulate a causal logic that holds together and translates cleanly into your programme design and logframe.

Construct a credible logframe.

Build a logical framework with defensible indicators and realistic targets, at the right level of complexity for any major donor.

Justify every line of your budget.

Design a realistic, competitive budget with a narrative that justifies each cost strategically and transparently.

Apply the craft that wins.

Use the sentence-level, paragraph-level, and structural writing techniques that separate proposals which win from those that merely comply.

Curriculum

The seven modules.

The course covers every component of a competitive proposal from the inside out. Each module builds on the last, and every lesson connects directly to a section of a real proposal.

M1The Scorer's Perspective and Proposal Strategy

Understand the funder's perspective completely before writing. How scoring panels work, how to deconstruct a call, and how to decide whether to bid.

M2Crafting a Compelling Needs Statement

Three strategic functions of the needs statement, evidence-based problem analysis with the problem tree, a five-paragraph structure, and the five most common weaknesses repaired.

M3Theory of Change

A five-step development process, the four categories of assumptions, diagram conventions, and how to write a theory of change narrative that keeps your whole proposal coherent.

M4Logframes and Results Frameworks

Vertical and horizontal logic, SMART-plus indicators, four approaches to target-setting, and the donor-specific formats used by USAID, FCDO, the EC, and the UN.

M5Budget Development and Budget Narratives

Bottom-up activity costing, cost principles, value-for-money framing, a three-element budget narrative, and the five errors that cost scores.

M6Persuasive Writing Craft

Sentence and paragraph principles that make writing compelling, the strategic functions of the executive summary, and a disciplined two-pass review process.

M7Section-by-Section Masterclass and Capstone

Organisational capacity, risk, sustainability, and cross-cutting themes, plus a 40-point pre-submission checklist, a post-submission reflection framework, and the capstone.

Every lesson includes at least one activity that connects directly to a real proposal. Keep a draft open and build as you learn.

What you keep

Finish with a professional credential, not just a video count.

The course closes with a capstone in which you apply the frameworks across all the major sections of a real or realistic proposal. Complete the modules and the capstone and you earn the GI Professional Certificate in Grant Proposal Writing.

  • A complete, section-by-section method you can apply to every proposal from now on.
  • A 40-point pre-submission checklist to run before you ever press submit.
  • A post-submission reflection framework so each application makes the next one stronger.
  • The GI Professional Certificate in Grant Proposal Writing on completion.

Who it's for

Who this course is for.

Built for the widest possible audience: anyone responsible for putting a competitive proposal together, whether it is your first major institutional bid or your hundredth.

The NGO programme or grants officer

You are responsible for proposal development and you want a reliable, professional method rather than reinventing the approach for every call.

The freelance writer or consultant

You write proposals for clients and want frameworks that make your work faster, sharper, and more consistently fundable.

The first-time institutional grant applicant

You are about to write your first serious bid to a major donor and you want to get it right rather than learn the hard way.

The experienced writer sharpening their edge

You want to close the gap between compliant and compelling, especially on theory of change and budget narrative.

This is probably not right for you if…

  • · · You are at the very start and need the basics of getting grant-ready first. You can start with our 'Grants Success System for NGOs' course.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

The next proposal you write could be the one that wins.

The organisations that consistently secure competitive funding are not the ones with the best missions. They are the ones who understand how panels score and who write to that standard every time. That is a learnable craft, and this masterclass teaches it.
